"IF OUR LOVE IS ONLY A WILL TO POSSESS, IT IS NOT LOVE." -THICH NHAT

Extreme example of Materialism
A Look at Materialism

After the American Revolution, a dream was realized; a dream of freedom. A freedom to leave your mark on the world which you seen fit. This dream was not only realized by the people of the United States, but by people world wide. The words “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” were first uttered, and people knew they had an opportunity to be anything their heart desired. A land of opportunity had sprung up that would change the world from that day forward.
That American dream has changed I must sadly report. The American dream is now an idea that has it’s roots firmly embedded around the ambition of being wealthy. Lavish homes and egotistical driven cars are the dream of the future.
Spend every last dollar till you can’t spend anymore. It’s the common myth that if you hold on to money too long, it’ll burn a hole in your pocket. Not only is it enough to relinquish every dollar in your possession, but to take loans out on your future earnings.
Money is so ingrained into our society, people were literally jumping out windows when they realized Bernie Madoff had swindled them. Grown men fell to their knees and wept like a grieving widow as their 401K’s dropped alongside the stock market.
Summer house, winter house, beach house, town house, house in the Swiss Alps, while homeless people stagger around in each major city in this country. There’s never enough, and you can always have more.
We’re constantly bombarded by commercial after commercial on television, radio, and even the internet trying to get us to buy. There’s always something better and faster.
House mortgage, car loan, utilities, cell phones, and insurance. What do all these things have in common? You’re going to pay them every month. Month after month, with no vacation in sight. You spend your entire life working, to only have to continue working to pay off the debts you’ve amassed through your lifetime. You might make more, but you also spend more.
There was a time, that a family could live fairly well with just one parent working. Now it takes two just to break even. All in an attempt to keep up with the joneses.
It’s not enough in society to just survive anymore, it’s now a bitter sweet war to the top of the mountain. It’s such a fight between the have’s and the have nots, that it’s taken on it’s own literary term. Class Warfare. This warfare superceeds age, religion, sex, and even race. Society picks it’s winners and losers based on economic status.
In a civilized utopia, we would cherish what we have, instead of focusing on the things we don’t. There’s no better time than right now to look back on the mistakes we’ve made, and move forward with a new attitude towards ourselves, and our fellow man. Men and women alike are losing their jobs at an alarming rate. Right now is the future, and future looks grim if we consciously snub our nose at anyone who doesn’t have it as good as we do.
